4 Things I Learned from My Mastermind

Last week I went to my Mastermind group meeting, headed by Alexandria Brown — here’s a photo of the two of us in sunny Palm Springs. I absolutely love this group of smart, powerful women, all on the same path to doing amazing things in their line of work. Here’s my top take-aways from my 45 minutes in the "hot seat" and all the informal discussions before and after the meeting.

I’m not alone, even when I feel alone. Sometimes I really do feel like a alien. Especially since I run my business and life much different than my professional (lawyer, doctor, accountant, engineer) and small business friends. My mastermind colleagues, even though we are spread all over the hemisphere, are on a similar path and are there to provide support for challenges that others may find hard to understand.
People will pay money to listen to me. I had not been planning to do any live events, mostly because it did not occur to me that people will spend bucks to fly in and listen to me talk for 3 days. I find that what I advise people seems obvious to me, but other people actually find it to be valuable!
I need to create a big payoff. I need to think about my big program or event where I will eventually make a large amount of money — this may be a high-end mastermind program, a live event, or a bootcamp — but something where I can make thousands of bucks in one sitting. Otherwise, what’s the point of all this work?
I must celebrate my success. I don’t always feel like I have already achieved anything. I have a book manuscript, but since I have not seen the printed book yet, it does not seem real. I must celebrate each step of the process, to keep myself motivated and acknowledge how far I have come.

What Do You Do In a Mastermind Group?

Many of you have asked me what we do in my Mastermind Group, so I thought I would share the general happenings from our Mastermind meeting last week in L.A.

Our mastermind group has a few components, including monthly meetings by telephone, a yahoo group for us to exchange emails, and we get six 15-minute coaching calls with Ali. But the core of the group benefits are the meetings we have three times per year.

At the meeting, each person gets 45 minutes to do whatever they want – to discuss particular issues or problems, to go over a business plan or new project idea, or to just brain dump a bunch of ideas and see what the group thinks.

During my session, I went through my current plans and asked the group some specific questions. I handed out a spreadsheet I had created that summarized all my marketing campaigns and my product funnels, and we talked about my target market and the group asked me to identify my passion. But the biggest part for me was just that the group made me focus on what I wanted to do, stop doing what I "should" do or did not enjoy, and help me figure out how to spend my time for the next 9 months.

Listening to everyone else’s presentations was very helpful to my own business — new marketing ideas, new wasy to spin my current offerings, and new ways to outsource work. Our head coach, Ali, also gave us some "insider-only" information about what she does in her million-dollar business, what works for her, and what she has changed to triple her income in just one year. And then at the end of the meeting, we went around the room and each person said what they are going to do by the next live meeting (90 days) and by the next telephone meeting (10 days).

This Mastermind group is a great balance of working with a coach and working with a group. There’s a clear leader to pass on information, give her opinion, and keep us on track. We also have the collective wisdom and experience of a group that provided more valuable feedback and ideas than any one person (no matter how great of a coach one person may be).

My Mastermind Group Reins Me In

I’m such a typical Entrepreneur personality – decisive, open to calculated risks … and easily distracted by bright shiny objects. A new information product, seminar, book, promotion campaign, marketing idea, or business venture comes along – and I run towards the new project, leaving tons of current projects either 95% finished, or finished and not yet promoted.

That’s where my Mastermind group comes into save the day.

Last week I spent two days in Los Angeles with my mastermind group — Alexandria Brown’s Platinum II Mastermind, to be specific — to go over my business plan, determine my priorities, and make me answer a bunch of questions that have kept me from making progress.

Ali runs her meetings by letting each person have 45 minutes of the groups time for whatever they want. I used that time for them to help me decide on what I am doing in what order and for whom.

Wow! Now everything in my business seems so simple! I know exactly how to spend my time today, this week, this month, and for the rest of the year. I have deadlines for each of my projects, and know what to do in what order. AND, I can see how they are all connected, leading my clients from step 1 to the end — and how I am going to make money!

And what did Grace think about her mommy being gone for 2 days? She had a great time with daddy, and my husband became better acquainted to what it is like to be a primary caregiver with business projects & client meetings also demanding your time, and the adventures of trying to pick your kid up by the 6 pm deadline when you are delayed by horrible traffic.

Both of them were very happy for me to come home. And, more appreciative of how I take care of them.
