How to Incorporate Adventure into Ordinary Life

How to Incorporate Adventure into Ordinary Life

Posted on 18. Jan, 2010 by Elizabeth Potts Weinstein in Videos

The top question I got from my / posts: Sake & Ziplines, Couches & Swords: What I Learned on #austinadventures w/ @CouchSurfingOri, The Real Reason I’m Moving to San Francisco (video), and Making the Commitment to Signposts & Sh*t Piles was …

yes, I love the idea of , but I have kids, I don’t have the money to , I don’t have time to get out of town … how do I incorporate & fun into my regular life?

And that’s the secret … is not about . It’s not about big. It’s not about . is a way of looking at the world, a way of living … even in your ordinary life.

So what out of your comfort zone, non-regular-person thing are you going to do today, to turn this day from ordinary into extraordinary?

What a great post! It reminded me of when I was little. My mom and I would wait for a big summer shower to pass by (the kind where the sun comes out right after) and play in the gutters along our street splashing in the water in our bare feet. I can still remember how GREEN and BRIGHT everything looked after the sun came back out. As adults, I think we lose a bit of our sense of adventure and the pleasure "little" adventures can bring. One of my favorite sayings is "We're not lost. We're on an adventure." (usually happens on a long road trip...lol) It's amazing how that one little statement can turn a very frustrating situation around and actually become fun. :)

"...everyday when its raining!" That's prime adventure time! Love her raincoat & boots ensemble and the acme telescoping microphone! Ahh to be a kid. The BEST play days were when a critical group of use were allowed out to play in the rain at the same time! And LOL - I saw the gates closed & chained in that ever-so-brief second! ;-)

Another favorite day was when they tore up the street on our entire block to repave it. At one point there were huge piles of dirt at intervals down the middle of the street. Talkin about an ultimate playplace for kids!! We were filthy dirty at the end of the day - my mom said I smelled 'like a wet puppy dog' and sent me straight to the tub from the front door! - but we had the BEST time and made up every kinda dirt hill game in the book! We were sad to come home from school the next day to newly paved streets! Our dirt kingdom was no more.

Betcha she'll remember that adventure day when she becomes the mom even! :-)

Thanks for sharing and taking me back. I can bring back the good ole days and go play in the rain if I want huh! :-) Wonder where I can get rain boots in my size. Hmmmmm....
  • That was my point exactly!

    I also highly recommend:
    - people-watching at the bus-stop
    - staring at evrything as you walk down the street
    - crackling every dry leaf
    - walking on footpaths in subtle yet important patterns
  • This is delightful Elizabeth. And it occurs to me while watching it that, as I've gotten older, there are more and more "adventures" that I probably avoid because of discomfort or physical effort. When I was Gracie's age I never even thought about those things. When exactly did I start thinking that those were valid "reasons" to avoid adventure? Hmmmm....
  • "I splashed in a big deep puddle"

Love the video!! I feel like walking to and from work in Boston everyday is a new adventure each time. Always something new to see and do.
  • I really like how you add a little lagniappe at the end of these videos.

This is one of my favorite videos of yours. You seemed very relaxed and confident.

One of my favorite adventures is going on a "jungle safari" in the back yard, or in the park. This is simply taking the time to really observe things we normally take for granted. Like, "Where do those ants come from anyway?" Another one is walking along a street I've never walked along. Looks very different when driving.

Looking forward to more of the Adventure Series.
  • As a former eHarmony user (a very good service I highly recommend for frustrated singles tired of meeting the wrong type of person- it worked so well for me I'm currently unsubscribed because of a great match they found me!), I was asked frequently about my idea of adventure... and I agree wholeheartedly with EPW.

Adventure isn't about expense or doing something on a grandiose scale. It's about getting outside your comfort zone and finding something that makes you a little nervous and excited.

Speaking of adventures... I foresee karaoke in Gracie's future.
  • Yes, we agreed we are getting a *real* karaoke machine when we move to San Francisco!! :)
  • In the words of Gracie, this was GREAAAAATTTTT!

  • you've started something here. I think the best way to spread this meme is to shoot our own adventure flicks with our kids. who's with me?
  • That is awesome!

I love that she has her own little survival kit - which includes a microphone.
  • Totally agree Elizabeth! You don't need to go to a far off place, you can do it right in your own area. A lot of it IS about living in the moment, as well as having that child perspective, looking at things in a way that normal society doesn't. There's PLENTY of things I can get into. For example, I live about a mile and a half away from a huge park and wildlife reserve. Also, just a half mile down our road is train tracks which, who knows where those lead...*Twilight zone music*

Just to name a few things I could do ;-)
  • when I was a little girl we would go walking down train tracks (w/ my dad). and have that moment when we would come to the bridge & have to lay down and listen to the tracks to see if a train was coming. awesome.
  • Speaking of that, I remember my cousin & I used to do some of the craziest stuff. To name a few off the top of my head: Hiked 5 miles down old country roads and into the woods to stumble across an abandoned, two story house and property with still a passable road and bridge. Snuck out of the house at 1AM to swim in the pool. Made a huge straw bed on the second level of my grandpa's barn and slept there. And no, it wasn't a nice and finished barn, one of those old, classic wooden ones with 1 inch cracks between the boards ;-)
  • I do need to buy my own pair of rain boots so I can jump into the puddles myself.

BTW, the park was closed. We violated a sign. #onlyafewpeopleknowwhatimtalkingabout :)
