Why SXSW? Why Go to Live Events Anymore?

Right now I’m in SFO airport about to board a plane to Austin (via Las Vegas) for South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi).

But in the age of social media, of being able to connect with people via twitter, facebook, phone, email, skype … why do we need to go to live events at all?

Why go to seminars and conferences to learn? Why not just learn new stuff via information products and

Why do we need in real life?

Are you coming to SXSW? Make sure we find each other!!

And … what have you got out of meeting people in real life?

Best way to find me is via twitter @ElizabethPW …. but …. that assumes twitter doesn't go down and AT&T does not crash in Austin (making my iPhone unusable). We can hope.

Introverted or just Murky, fantastic point, and I completely agree. (Social Media is a Bridge, love that)

By building my business all over the country and starting the relationship over the phone or via the net I've almost always taken the relationship to another level (Actually deeper) after I've actually met them.

I completely have been living this philosophy for the past 10 years. There's NO substitute for connecting in person.

I had the honor of meeting you face to face at the Valentine's Day Tweetup. I appreciate your ability to step in front of the camera…it is so much easier behind the camera.

You've convinced me…I'm going to SXSW next year! Have fun and although I'm in Dallas, let me be the first one to welcome you to Texas!

It's ok I thought her hair looked great too. #notsuckingupeither

I thought her hair looked great, her smile was awesome and the shirt was a nice color…

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting any of my tweeps yet. But I do have a growing list of them I would like to meet!

I completely agree with you on actually meeting someone IRL… the chemistry, the eye contact, etc… you really can't beat that and you definitely can't do that online! Webcams help, but still… (and I haven't even web-cammed with anyone…)

Though I have noticed that the more you interact with someone online – they can't hide their true character, no matter how hard they try! Things slip out or something happens… know what I mean? I am better at reading people IRL, but I've been learning new stuff just interacting with all these people online :) Though I did get a bit of a bad surprise yesterday, my online experience so far has been good.

And as soon as I meet some of these people IRL, I will let you know how it went! – maybe it will be you… LOL – if you had moved to San Diego it would have been easy… my brother in law just moved there for Coronado… but I do love San Francisco #onlybeenoncebutlovedit :)

See you soon! Woohoo mini Monster Vegas Tweetup reunion! I so agree the face to face is the best which is why I just started a local group in Houston for women in business. It is nice to get away from behind the laptop whether it's at SXSW or locally. I crashed SXSW last year for a day just to meet people and it was the best. Now I'm actually paying :)

One of the very reasons that I went to your favorite ;) event #Shine in Vegas was to meet people like you, EPW! So, this video is spot on. This is the reason that I believe every internet marketer should attend at least one of these major events every year- to meet with their peeps in real life. Great video. Love the bloopers at the end- LOL. Have fun at “South By”! See you next week!

EPW! So excited to get to see you at this weekend for some fun, not truly SXSWi events! I have only met people from online one other time, and it was well worth the slight effort it took to get there. You were there! Hehe!

For the record TT and Shelly:
I told EPW offline that two other things looked great. One was her lipstick. And I am sure you can figure out the second (and third).

Haha! I was going to lurk this one out, but you're right, her hair *does* look awesome.

    And I'm #totallysuckinguptoo. =)

Meeting you in person last year in NYC made you stand out to me. It's like 2D comic book to putting on those 3D glasses. I wanted to engage with you even more whether it be video, phone, reading what you write. It made me care more about you and it built trust. That is firmly in place. One memory that stood out was when you complimented Marie during her presentation. Another was attending your tweet up at that cool bar. I could be way off but this was how it was for me – it seemed I sensed a teeny tinge of shyness for a millisecond then it changed to warmth. It was my first tweet up and a lot of fun.

Real life vs. social media is just so different. You would think it would be virtually the same but meeting people up close and in person causes a much deeper connection and a much more memorable experience.

Just like learning via a seminar environment vs. a home study course, things are retained better.

Totally wish I could of met you and all the other awesome people going to SXSW. I swear this is going to happen soon, very very soon…

  • http://lisamariemary.com/blog/ lisamariemary

Totally agree! Twitter took my connections to a new level and then meeting some of those people face to face really cemented things!

And yes, your hair does look great! I was thinking while watching the vid of the first ever vid I'd seen of you. I think you were sitting in the living room floor, leaning on the coffee table or the couch. You seemed uber intelligent, but, rather tired – not nearly the 'ball of fire' that you have unleashed today! It's been amazing to watch you 'shake off the dust' and be the *REAL* EPW!!!

It was so awesome getting to hang out with you at SXSW and meeting so many other awesome people. :) You definitely do get to feel people's energy, and it's something that I knew I had to do… but now I really understand it even more!

Thank you all, it's funny how I did not realize how long my hair was until everyone started pointing it out, and seeing this video & pics from sxsw. Weird.

And yes, Alli, lipstick and cleavage FTW.

  • http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com ElizabethPW

Now if only we could make it lots cheaper to meet in person. Maybe we need to start our own conference to get all of our peeps in the same place. #efficient

  • http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com ElizabethPW

Thanks Owen, it was great to meet you too! I think I have an advantage b/c I was never behind the camera until I was in front of it ….

If you're in Dallas you have no excuse to not make the drive to Austin for SXSW next year!! :-)

  • http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com ElizabethPW

Yes, I do agree that eventually someone's true character comes out. But if you meet someone IRL … it's much easier to intuit fast. Sometimes online it takes a while.

Great to see you last weekend in Austin, Jennifer!

Congrats on starting your local group!

Yes, it was so great to meet you in Vegas, and now that we met once we can totally hang out in San Francisco! (yay girls night out!)

Martha – it was great to see you in Austin last weekend, next time I'm there we need to get me & Ori down for some airplane adventures w/ you. :)

  • http://elizabethpottsweinstein.com ElizabethPW

Yes, I am actually shy IRL … it can take me a bit to warm up, so sometimes people think I'm standoffish or I don't like them. Glad you found that I warmed up for you! :)
