Focus Sucks!

Do you have more than one business, or more than one passion?

Has everyone been telling you that you need to “pick just one?”

For us multipassionate (to quote Marie Forleo) entrepreneurs, focusing on “just one thing” would be the death of us.  But if we don’t “focus” how can we get anything done?

A bit of wind noise and someone turned on lawn mower near the end, but vid looks pretty good, eh? :)

Also realized that I left the “on” out of the title screen of the video. Brilliant. Well, I’m not fixing it right now, so any grammar-busy-bodies will just have to deal w/ it. :)

Amen Elizabeth! I used to joke with a mentor that I worked on the power of three — it seemed necessary that I be juggling at least three business ideas at once just to keep from getting bored. I think it’s a typical scenario for those of us who are naturally idea generators, and one that I have only recently begun to embrace in myself.

And yes, it is the power of fully experiencing the present moment, combined with the mindful development of organizational strategies that help keep me sane and happy. Thank you so much for this post!

Hmm… once again, I feel like you’re talking right at me! (To me?) I’ve given up on multitasking (as much as humanly/geekily possible) but the more than 1 biz idea thing is still at the back of my mind sometimes. I think I go through many phases! Right now I am sticking to my “one thing”, but deciding to branch out within my business is not entirely against my plans. :)

    lol on “you-ness”

I have to agree with you that it’s not about letting your other passions die, but more about focusing on what’s in front of you at the moment. It usually starts with making a decision to focusing on whatever you need to and actually committing to it. Decide -> Commit -> Focus

What do you think about that?

My sentiments exactly, Elizabeth! Glad you brought up this subject. I am also a Mom (now of 2 teens and one tween), wife, friend, entrepreneur and just plain multipassionate person! People often ask me how I get so much done (They see that more than the balls I drop ;) and I always say its about being fully in the moment. For me, I find that even if I look like I am multitasking I am really not: more like sequential unitasking, if you get what I mean. Also a challenge for me to move away from the illusion that is multitasking. Thanks for your reflections. Always liked you on Twitter, but now…count me as a fan!

Hi Elizabeth ~ I love this video. I felt like you gave me permission to do MANY things – - which is how I've always been. I have been working part-time in my son's school as the program director of the afterschool program. It's only a few hours a week, but it pays the bills and has benefits [dental, medical]. The rest of my working time is as a home-based travel agent. It rocks, but I feel that I'm ready to take on more. So I've been working thru an idea of becoming an affiliate marketer. I like to talk, so this is perfect. Thanks for all your videos! Sandra

Good advice. We were just discussing this yesterday with each other. What do we want to focus on. It came down to, what do we want to focus on today, this week, this month… And now we be sure to focus on what we are doing now. not what we will be dong, but what we are doing. right now.
    Thanks for the reminder. :)
